Faith through the lens of culture

Interested in thought-provoking film and conversation? This popular film series, co-sponsored by First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley and New College Berkeley, returns this summer with a collection of films that chronicle the story of people invited by God on journeys of a lifetime. Films include Ida (8/3), Stones Cry Out (8/10), The Letters to Father Jacob (8/17), and The Kid with a Bike (8.24). Includes a screening and discussion about how the film intersects with faith, led by a rotation of facilitators

August 3 –– Ida / with Sam Choi, MD

A Polish drama about a young woman on the verge of taking vows to become a Catholic nun.

August 10 –– Stones Cry Out / with Marilyn McEntyre, PhD

In the land where Christianity was born, little is ever said about the Palestinian Christian minority.

August 17 –– Letters to Father Jacob / with Sharon Gallagher, MTS

A Finnish priest takes in a pardoned criminal, who is transformed by the quiet witness of the humble priest. 

August 24 –– The Kid with a Bike / with Ryan Pemberton, MTS

This Belgian movie tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who is comforted by a woman after his father has abandoned him. 


2018 Facilitators:

Sam Choi, MD, is former Assistant Film Curator at the Carnegie Institute Museum of Art and former Curatorial Film Assistant at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris (Centre Pompidou).

Sharon Gallagher, MTS, is professor of Christianity and the Media at New College Berkeley. She is also the editor of Radix magazine, for which she writes a film column. 

Marilyn McEntyre, PhD, is author of numerous works of poetry and prose including Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies. She has taught literature courses at Westmont College, Princeton Seminary, and New College Berkeley. 

Ryan Pemberton, MTS, is the minister for University Engagement at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley. He is the author of Called: My Journey to C.S. Lewis's House and Back Again.
