The Gift of Group Spiritual Direction

Online / zoom

Have you ever wanted to know more about spiritual direction—and how it might serve your faith and life? This conversation is for you.

People long to communicate with God. We want to know about God, but mostly we deeply desire to be in relationship with God. More than 15 years ago the New College Berkeley Board of Trustees decided to try to address that need by creating more programs that help people open their hearts to God in regular, honest ways.

Since that pivotal decision, New College has every year offered spiritual direction in a small group format, led by a prayerful, skilled team of spiritual directors. Hundreds of people have found that this communal spiritual practice amplifies their ability to hear God.

Join us for an informal, Zoomed conversation with Susan Phillips who created this ministry within New College and, since it began, has offered supervision to the wonderful and dedicated spiritual directors.

About Susan Phillips:

A spiritual director and professor of sociology and Christian spirituality, Susan Phillips earned a Ph.D. in sociology at U.C. Berkeley and served as the Executive Director of New College Berkeley, an affiliate for the Graduate Theological Union, from 1994 to 2022.

In addition to teaching in a number of institutions within the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, and serving on its doctoral faculty, Susan has taught for many years for Fuller Theological Seminary, Regent College (Canada), and San Francisco Theological Seminary. Her books, like her teaching, explore the intersection of Christian spirituality and social science, and include the award-winning Crisis of Care: Affirming and Restoring Caring Practices in the Helping Professions, Candlelight: Illuminating the Art of Spiritual Direction, and The Cultivated Life: From Ceaseless Striving to Receiving Joy. Susan loves listening to people as they pray and seek the Holy in spiritual direction, retreats, and everyday life
